Chen Fenwan uses the concept of "maximalist" to connect with Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s vibrant and kaleidoscopic energy provides her with an endless stream of creative inspiration. Chen, who was born in Guangzhou and grew up immersed in the culture of the Greater Bay Area, has particularly vivid memories of Hong Kong. These impressions are built through countless visits and the ease of encountering Hong Kong’s presence across various channels. Layer upon layer, they have been intricately depicted in her new work.
Her answer remains consistent when asked how she found inspiration for creating this Hong Kong-themed piece: “Going for a stroll.” She draws from repeated, embodied experiences.

From an initial invitation by The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), the nearly two-year preparation culminated in Chen’s new work, Hong Kong Delights, debuting this spring at Art Central 2024, located at Hong Kong’s Central Harbourfront.
In March, on the shores of Victoria Harbour, Chen presented her maximalist papercutting art, infused with iconic Hong Kong imagery. Drawing from the city's neon signs, tea restaurants' egg tarts and pineapple buns, Star Ferry rides, cross-border trains, and public architecture, she layered signature colors, curves, and intricate compositions to craft a papercut signboard rich with everyday urban elements.
When we find ourselves face-to-face with Hong Kong, or physically present there, our muscle memory instinctively records it all: the overwhelming brilliance of neon signs lining narrow streets, the city impressions painted by dim sum and milk tea flavors, and the goosebumps raised by the air conditioning blasting in shops. All these sensations accumulate so that when we think of Hong Kong, we recall an excess of everything.
What makes Hong Kong so irreplaceable is its localization and its bonds.

FAQs
What does paper cutting mean to you?
"Paper cutting is the art of choices—removing parts of the paper so what remains is what I find beautiful. I’m not someone who pursues technical perfection in paper cutting; rather, I’m someone who finds joy in it. While some people think paper cutting is repetitive and tedious, I experience a mysterious energy within its repetition. The actions may repeat, but the feelings they evoke are never the same."
