In Jiangnan, everything flows —
Water trickles past stone bridges, pavilions cast shadows across rippling canals, corridors stretch between terraces and boats. This region’s charm lies not only in its gentle landscape but in the harmonious movement between people and nature — an embodiment of love in motion.
Chen Fenwan’s new public installations take root in this poetic atmosphere. Guided by themes of “paper-cutting, softness, emotion, and fluidity,” her artworks interweave personal sentiment with the cultural fabric of Jiangnan.
For Fenwan, papercutting is more than a traditional technique — it is a living, breathing medium. Beneath the still surface lies dynamic potential: folds of time, reconstructed symbols, and contemporary emotion. In her works, meandering lines and rhythmic patterns echo the flow of ancient water towns — a visual choreography of feeling and place. It is a movement not only seen but deeply felt.
Flower in Heart Bloom
For her installation at the Panlong River, Chen Fenwan creates a vibrant, oversized pink paper-cut motif — a contemporary "window blossom" — and places it at the heart of the waterway. From this visual origin point, scattered patterns ripple outward, gradually drifting along the length of the narrow river. As they unfold, these paper-cut forms converse with the aged architecture and the gently flowing water, infusing Jiangnan’s classical scenery with the pulse of contemporary art.
Swaying gently with the river’s surface, the paper patterns become metaphors for emotional exchange — the ever-shifting currents between people, within the self, and across time. Their reflection in the water blurs the boundary between the real and the imagined, just as love moves invisibly, yet undeniably.
Flower in Heart Bloom invites visitors to walk along the river’s edge, to listen — not just to the water, but to the tender murmurs of feeling as they float and unfold.
Feathers of Streaked Light
Built in 1340 during the Yuan Dynasty, Xianghua Bridge spans the water, linking north and south, bearing witness to countless encounters and farewells across the centuries. More than just a physical connector, a bridge becomes a conduit of emotion — a place where memories intertwine, imbued with warmth and belonging.
On both sides of the bridge, paper-cut forms flourish like colorful meridians and lifelines. They root and twist along the walkway, flowing in layered rhythms — as if echoing the emotional traces left behind by every crossing, every parting.
Atop a heart-shaped frame, vibrant lines coil and flutter, weaving romantic tales of love. Birds soar and loop alongside these hearts, climbing across the bridge in playful harmony, transforming unspoken feelings into silent signals that dance with the wind.

Breeze Through Grace
In Jiangnan, pavilions once hosted scholars drifting cups down winding streams; today, they offer travelers a place to rest, to pause by the river and listen to its murmur, or to lean on a railing in casual conversation. Some gather here, some part ways, while the wind quietly gathers the emotional traces left behind, whispering them back at one’s ear.
Here, the formal symmetry of a traditional pavilion is reimagined as a resting place for emotions. Vivid paper-cut wind screens flutter like drifting thoughts, swaying and circling through the space, infusing every corner of the pavilion with feeling.
Pink sets the emotional tone of this work — as light as mist over apricot blossoms, as tender as vulnerability, as bold as the courage to care.
Throughout Panlong Tiandi, Chen Fenwan’s pink paper cuts meander with the flowing water, stretch across bridges, shimmer in shifting light, and dance with the breeze — quietly unfolding a story of “love in motion”: gentle, enduring, and ever-present.
