Dancing with Impermanence, Until Slowly Returning to Stillness♬
Rhythms of Impermanence is a new installation I created this year.
The work was inspired by my observations while running.
🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
I now run every week,
most often along the lake at Foshan Asian Art Park.
During moments when I stop to rest and let my mind wander,
I watch the ripples spreading across the water and the distorted reflections of the surrounding landscape.
I am drawn to this irregular, ever-changing beauty in motion.
Like white noise,
it brings me into a deeply settled state of mindfulness.
The flowing ripples reminded me of moiré patterns—
an optical interference phenomenon produced when two or more periodic structures are superimposed.
It is an optical illusion:
an image that does not actually exist in reality.
Over more than a decade of making papercut works,
I have cut countless recognizable forms—
animals, plants, the faces of myself and the people around me.
It was not until Rhythms of Impermanence
that I used scissors for the first time to depict something abstract, something difficult for the naked eye to grasp.
Rhythms of Impermanence continues my exploration of “infinite” structures and the hollow-cut language of papercutting.
As the work rotates,
it produces a visual illusion reminiscent of a moiré pattern.
When two similar but not identical repeating patterns are superimposed,
the eye perceives a new pattern that appears to move slowly—
although it does not actually exist on either layer.
I see this visual parallax, generated through the interaction between things,
as a metaphor for understanding relationships:
Impermanence does not disappear. It is being regenerated in every moment.
Impermanence is not chaos, but movement within order.
And here,
impermanence is the self, the body, relationships, emotions, and the universe.
