Tofu (Expanded Edition) – Editor: Zhu Yingchun
A Simple Slice of Tofu, A Universal Metaphor
In Face of Tofu, All Stand Equal
Chen Fenwan was invited to contribute to the expanded edition of Tofu, a concept-themed book edited by Zhu Yingchun, with an artistic creation bearing the same name. Chen creates this unique art installation by blending the culinary tradition of tofu with the folk art of paper cutting. Slice into the firm, compact block of tofu, and you’ll uncover delicate paper-cut motifs hidden within—an interplay of texture and craft.
Tofu, a staple on Chinese dining tables, belies the intricate craftsmanship behind its making: selecting soybeans, soaking, grinding, filtering, boiling, coagulating, and pressing.
Similarly, Chen’s favored art medium—paper—transforms from raw plant fibers into letters, ticket stubs, and books, all carriers of human emotion, memory, and imagination. Like tofu, paper undergoes a meticulous journey of transformation.
Art is born from complexity, and tofu shares the same narrative.
Though seemingly disparate, tofu and paper cutting share profound commonalities that Chen sensitively captures. Tofu’s soft yet resilient nature holds a quiet strength within its gentle touch. Slicing through its surface reveals an unbroken integrity and a vivid structure. Paper cutting, the art of shaping paper with scissors or knives, maintains coherence and order through every intricate cut and stroke, striking a delicate balance between fragility and resilience.
Both tofu and paper cutting embody this harmony of softness and strength—a shared essence that makes them ideal counterparts in Chen’s Tofu experiment, where she delves into tofu’s visual and tactile possibilities.
Only by cutting through the pristine tofu can one uncover the paper-cut imagery within. Art seldom speaks in absolutes; it requires navigating its intricacies to grasp its depth.
Bon appétit—enjoy the Tofu dish that Chen has lovingly prepared!
