A Panther Nimbly Acrosses

Invited by MODERN WEEKLY, Fenwan illustrated a cover story that blends the image of a panther with elements of Guangzhou city, resonating with Into the Wild — the Guangzhou tour of the Cartier Panther-themed Exhibition.
Through layered papercuts, Fenwan created a sense of depth and space, establishing a profound backdrop for the panther. The iconic spiraling Guangzhou Tower and the kapok tree alluded to the exhibition's destination, reflecting both the city where Fenwan grew up and her personal history.
The panther consistently embodies an image of elegance, mystery, and keen awareness. Cartier's brand culture perpetually evokes the creative spirit and courage of contemporary female artists. To Fenwan, its agility resonates with the art of papercutting; the intricate, hollow forms and the graphic pattern of leopard spots share a common visual language. These distinct elements are linked through shared characteristics, akin to moments of sudden inspiration.
The creation of the physical artwork involved using various shades of green to illustrate the interplay of light and shadow among the elements, while the panther's body required careful treatment of the gradient of the gold color. Ultimately, adjusting the thickness of the padding in order to control the distance between tiny color blocks.

Interview between MODERN WEEKLY and the artist Chen Fenwan (excerpts)
A / 陈粉丸 Chen Fenwan
Q:What images come to your mind when mentioning Panthers?
A: Extremely perceptive pair of panther eyes crossing quickly.
Q: As a contemporary woman artist, how do you view the figure as well as the spirit of Cartier Panthere?
A: The creative spirit of contemporary female artists should be courageous. The layered experience of courage is surely magnificent. I deeply admire the timeless charm of Ms. Dusan and the enduring female spirit she embodies. Panthere possesses a formidable presence, is inspiring, and stands as a spiritual totem.
Q: The Cartier exhibition "Into the Wild" is located in Guangzhou, for you, what kind of existence is Guangzhou in your mind?
A: Guangzhou is my home and my history.
Q: In terms of your current work, what is the most central part of creating in your mind?
A: observation,long-term observation. Labor and find joy in repetition.
Q: It's a huge challenge for many people to incorporate artworks into commercial activities, so how do you retain your artistic core unaltered in commercial collaborations?
A: First, I have to acknowledge my own ignorance. The insights gained from business collaborations often exceed my expectations, providing new stimuli and materials for artists. Second, I believe that there are no sharp boundaries in the world; business and art can progress together. Business needs the language of art, and art requires the impetus from business. I always hope to blur this sharp boundary as I move forward.
