I want to tell in my own way that this kind of beauty is strongly present in our aesthetic experience. Fenwan answered when she was asked, "Do you feel like you're cutting a belief?"

剪纸未必得有一张纸。

You don't have to get a piece of paper to do paper-cutting.

《誌屋 Journal》与Burberry特邀艺术家陈粉丸为新年首刊创作封面视觉,艺术作品中“猛虎下山”的形象与Burberry虎年新品老虎形象不谋而合。这是东西方一次远距离的对话与碰撞,却不约而同归于同路。自古至今,老虎作为图腾的形象生生不息,正寓意人类始终在追求那一份信念与勇气。

ZIWU Journal and Burberry invited Fenwan to create the cover vision for the first issue of the New Year 2022. The image of "Tiger down the Mountain" in the artwork coincides with the image in Burberry's new product for the Year of the Tiger. This is a long-distance dialogue between the East and the West, but they come together in the same way. Since ancient times, the image of tiger as a totem keeps growing, which means that human beings are always in pursuit of faith and courage.

“猛虎下山”有一种气场,代表着勇气,也是粉丸原本就很欣赏的气质。

此次合作位时新春前后,封面故事灵感源自虎年形象,却仍然是十分陈粉丸的方式:将高浓度色彩填入镂空形式的视觉,附带着一种由剪纸技艺本身舒展开来的创作姿态。另一个关键词「对称」则构成最主要的内容,直接令一山得以容纳二虎。

"Tiger Down the Mountain" represents an aura, and courage, which Fenwan always admires.

The cover story was inspired by the image of the Year of the Tiger, but it was still in a very personal way: a high saturation of color is filled in the hollowed lines, with a kind of artistic gesture that unfolds from the paper-cutting art itself. "Symmetry" is another key word, directly making up the story of A Mountain Lives Two Tigers.

“对称是我艺术创作的重要元素,也是剪纸里主要构思。一般来说,剪纸需要用到的是“对折”这个动作,沿着折痕打开一张纸,你就会拥有一张最简单的剪纸。作为艺术创作者,我希望赋予这种视觉对称更多外延。

对称,也可以是情感上的对称,代表着你的付出与收获。或者是时间上的对称,像一个对称的坐标轴。试想我们所过的日子,会不会也是一种对称?”

"Symmetry is important element of my art creation, also is the main idea in paper cutting. Generally, paper-cutting needs a "fold in half" action. Open a piece of paper along the crease, you will have a piece of the simplest paper cut. As an artist, I hope to give more extension on this kind vision.

Symmetry, which can also be emotional, represents what you give and what you get. Or it's symmetric in time, like an axis. Think about the life we live, is there a kind of symmetry?"

由《一山容二虎》延展开来,粉丸在新刊中谈及虎与剪纸的结合方式,也就更浸入地联系到凝聚在一次次取与舍中的喜怒哀乐、人生姿态。

“剪纸是我重要创作和表达手段,但并不是我唯一的选择。剪纸带给我更多的是思考,我如何在剪纸这种材质中思考阴阳与镂空,它是一个关于取舍、得失、平衡的艺术形式。必须要有很多剪纸的经验才能获得这种感受。当我用剪刀用去剪一张真的纸,或者和这次合作一样用剪纸的模式去创作图腾,我必须知道哪些要去掉一些图形,要留下什么图形。在我这里,我希望剪纸除了是一门了不起的手艺之外,可以给人更多的想象力。”

Extended from A Mountain Lives Two Tigers, Fenwan talks about the combination of tiger and paper cutting, but also reflect the cohesion of the joys and sorrows and life attitude through her takes and gives up.

"Paper-cutting is an important channel for me, but it is not my only choice. It brings me more about thinking. How do I think about Yin and Yang and hollow out in the material of paper? It is an art form about balance, gain and loss. You would get this feeling only after getting a lot of experience in paper cutting. When I use scissors to cut a piece of paper, or when I create totems with a pad as in this project, I must figure out which shapes to remove and which ones to leave behind. In my case, I hope paper-cutting can give people more imagination besides being an amazing craft."
